What are the top five things you look for in a new vehicle? I bet you five bucks that “good gas mileage” is one of them. I was right, wasn’t I? Now you owe me five bucks. Or, you can just read this blog, whatever works. Anyway, if you drive a car that might not get the best mileage, there are ways that you can increase your MPGs through changing your driving. Seriously. Read on to learn more!

The most important thing is to not speed. When you speed, you accelerate and decelerate frequently, which brings down your MPG’s. For every five mph over 50 you go, you’re paying roughly 10-20 cents more per gallon of gas. You also shouldn’t idle. Come to a full stop and then turn your vehicle off. Idling wastes a lot of gas, and is also bad for the environment.

On the topic of speeding and not doing that, use your cruise control. It eliminates extra acceleration and deceleration that happens when you’re driving on the highway, and keeps you moving at a consistent rate of speed.

If you have a storage box or bicycle rack mounted on your roof, consider changing that to something that is rear-mounted. With a bulky large box or rack on your roof, the aerodynamics of your vehicle decrease. This, in turn, decreases your mileage.

Finally, focus on safety and be patient. That’s probably the best tip we’ve got for you, no matter what your gas mileage is.
