It’s time to replace that old, dead battery that is in your vehicle. Whether you consider yourself a very handy repairman or not, this week I have a simple guide that will help you change your dead battery from the comfort of your driveway. Take a look below and give us a call if you have any questions or maybe you just want to say hi! Either way – we’re here if you need help!

  1. Make sure your engine is off, cool, and you are parked on a flat surface. Give your engine enough time to cool down before popping open the hood – we don’t want you to burn yourself. Once you’re ready, pop open the hood, locate the battery and remove the holding clamp that is keeping your battery inside the holding tray. If your holder uses bolts to keep the battery in place, simply unscrew using a wrench.
  2. Next, you’ll want to loosen the bolts holding the terminals in place. Start with the negative side, these are usually black with a negative sign. Loosen the bolt and remove the cable from the port. Do the same with the positive, red side and be sure to move the cables away so they are not touching the battery.
  3. Now you can go ahead and remove your battery from your vehicle. Be careful, batteries tend to be heavy and hard to lift. Seek assistance if you need it. Next, clean the terminals, cables, and holding tray with an anti-corrosive solution and a wire brush. Let each part dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  4. Insert your new battery back into the holding tray and reattach the cables to the correct ports. Start with the positive terminal, attach the cable and tighten the bold. Repeat with the negative terminal. Make sure all of your connection points are properly fastened and secure your battery with the clamp once again. The battery should not be able to move or wiggle once secured by the holding clamp.
  5. Try starting your vehicle, if it starts right up, you are good to go. Close the hood and be on your way. If your vehicle does not start, check the connection points to ensure there isn’t a loose connection anywhere. If you continue to have problems, give us a call and we will be happy to assist any way we can!

And there you have it! Our battery changing guide. Good luck with changing your next dead battery and let us know if we can be of any assistance to you!
