TORRANCE, Calif. (September 24, 2009) Toyota has added standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) to all Yaris models for 2010. These features make all Yaris models standard with Toyota Star Safety System™, which also includes an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Yaris is the only vehicle in its segment to offer this set of safety features as standard equipment. A manual transmission with standard tachometer is now available on the five-door model. Rear window defroster is now standard on all Yaris models.
The Yaris line includes three distinct models, including a four-door sedan, three-door Liftback and a five-door Liftback.
Yaris remains the smart choice for consumers looking for outstanding value, safety features and fuel economy in the entry subcompact category. With the five-speed manual transmission, Yaris is EPA-rated to achieve 29 MPG city / 36 MPG highway; the ratings are 29/35 with the smooth-shifting four-speed electronic automatic transmission.
Performance and Efficiency The Toyota Yaris brings a high level of balanced value, safety and a fun-to-drive experience to the entry subcompact segment. Its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and produces 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. The optional four-speed automatic transmission features uphill/downhill shift logic to reduce gear "hunting" for smooth performance when driving in hills.
Handling and Ride The Yaris is built around a highly rigid structure incorporating strategic use of high-tensile steel. Damping materials strategically located throughout the body structure reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to help give Yaris a comfortable, quiet ride. Suspension and steering are tuned to deliver responsive handling, a smooth ride and excellent maneuverability, including a remarkably tight 32.6-ft. turning circle for the Sedan and just 30.8-ft. for the Liftback.
The L-arm MacPherson strut front suspension includes a 0.9-inch stabilizer bar. A hydroformed torsion beam axle for the rear suspension provides efficient packaging. Both the Yaris Liftback and Sedan ride on standard 175/65 R14 tires with steel wheels and full wheel covers. Newly-styled 15-inch steel or aluminum-alloy wheels are also available.
The sport-themed Liftback and Sedan S models feature color-keyed front and rear under-bumper spoilers; amber illuminated tachometer; sport seat fabric; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rear window defroster; rear window wiper; AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA capability iPod® interface; auxiliary audio jack, satellite radio capability, CD text display function; and "S" badging. Aluminum-alloy wheels are available.
Safety and Security Yaris helps protect its occupants with a reinforced cabin that integrates front and rear crumple zones and energy-absorbing materials on the roof and doors. All five seating positions are equipped with height-adjustable headrests and three-point seatbelts, and the front seatbelts integrate pretensioners and force limiters. Standard driver and passenger advanced dual-stage front airbags (SRS) inflate according to collision severity. A front seat passenger sensor is designed to detect weight capacity on the seat to determine whether the airbag should inflate and the correct inflation power.
Front-seat-mounted side airbags with first and second row roll-sensing side curtain airbags are standard in all Yaris models The rear seat is equipped with the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) uniform child restraint anchorage system.
Comfort and Convenience The Yaris Liftback interior provides roominess that belies its exterior dimensions. The comfortable cabin provides rear seating for three with headrests in all seating positions. A 60/40 split rear seatback is included in the optional Convenience Package on Sedan and Power Package on Liftback. Yaris models are designed for convenience, providing easy-to-reach audio and climate controls, an array of storage spaces including a center console with built-in storage, and cup holders in the front and rear. The Liftback’s rear seatback folds down to expand cargo capacity from 9.3 cubic feet to 25.7 cubic feet. The Yaris Sedan's spacious trunk offers nearly 12.9 cubic feet of capacity.
The instrument cluster is center-mounted and high on the dash to enhance forward visibility. Generous standard convenience features on Yaris Liftback and Sedan models include air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; rear window deforster; tachometer on manual transmission models; digital clock; a map light; intermittent windshield wipers with mist control; and dual sunvisors with vanity mirrors.
Options
Yaris is available with a number of comfort and convenience options, as well as a selection of accessories for individualization. The convenience package is available on the Sedan and Liftback and adds an AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability auxiliary audio jack (AUX), satellite radio capability, and CD text display function; upgraded 185/60R 15-inch tires on steel wheels with full wheel covers; and 60/40 folding rear seatbacks. The Liftback includes a rear wiper and a sliding and reclining feature in the rear seats. All audio systems are satellite radio capable.
The optional Power Package further equips Yaris with power door locks, windows, and side mirrors. New for 2010, all Yaris models include a remote keyless entry system and engine immobilizer. The Sedan Power Package also includes upgraded interior trim.
The Sport Package, available on Liftback and Sedan, features color-keyed front and rear under-body spoilers; side rocker panels; rear spoiler; integrated front fog lamps; amber illuminated tachometer; driver and front passenger sport seats with sport fabric; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA capability iPod® interface; auxiliary audio jack, satellite radio capability, CD text display function; and “S” badging.
By selecting the Power or Sport Package, customers can individualize the Yaris with stand alone options, which include 15-inch alloy wheels and cruise control. Integrated fog lamps are available as an option on the Power Package.
The Liftback is available in six colors and the Sedan is offered in nine colors. Only two colors, Polar White and Black Sand Pearl, are shared by both body styles for an array of 15 color choices over the two body styles.
Exterior Design
The Yaris Sedan rides on a longer version of the platform, with a 100.4-inch wheelbase versus 96.9 inches for both Liftback models. The Yaris Sedan has an overall length of 169.3 inches compared to 150.6 inches for the Liftback models, and the Sedan is 2.5 inches lower than the Liftbacks, as well. The Yaris Sedan is distinguished by its own styling, with the grille framed by sharp character lines integrated into the aerodynamic hood and windshield.
Like the Liftback, the Sedan features a "T" face grille that emphasizes the Toyota identity. Eliminating outer moldings from the windshield and door glass helps to enhance aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. In the rear, the tail lamps frame a wide trunk opening. The trunk lid extends down to the bumper molding to provide a substantial appearance as well as easy trunk access.
The distinctive rear styling features large taillights, and the wide liftgate provides easy cargo area access. Styled at Toyota's European design studio, ED², and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Design Division, the Yaris Liftback features a strong, modern mono-form shape with short overhangs. Its arched beltline and wheels pushed outward at each corner give Yaris Liftback an assertive stance, while integrated bumpers, headlamps, and color-keyed door handles and mirrors lend sophisticated appearance.
Auto dealer puts Boys & Girls Club children on two wheels
HAGERSTOWN — Christmas came early Thursday for more than five dozen youths from Boys & Girls Club of Washington County.
The children arrived at Younger Toyota on Dual Highway by the vanful from six county clubs, knowing a big surprise awaited.
Sixty-five new bicycles were lined up in the dealership’s showroom, and owner Brandon Younger said it was the first time for such a giveaway.
“It's always better to give than receive. We try to live that,” said Younger, who said bike helmets were provided for children who needed one.
Buck Browning, director of development for Boys & Girls Club, said the children who received the bikes were selected from the Pennsylvania Avenue, Noland Village, Elgin Station, Frederick Manor, Cascade and Hancock centers. They were chosen based on attendance, participation and effort in school, and, in some cases, where there was need.
“This is probably one of the biggest, nicest events in the 13 years I've been with the club. This is unbelievable,” Browning said.
Jenell Moore, whose 7-year-old daughter, Trinity, attends the Pennsylvania Avenue club, said her daughter loves going to the club. Trinity's Christmas list included a bike, because her old one was rusty.
“This is awesome. When you walk in and see all the bikes and everyone waiting, it's very exciting,” Moore said.
It took some patience as the children waited for all of the vans to arrive. Once the vans were all at the dealership, Younger and his staff made a receiving line and gave high-fives and words of congratulations to the youths as they entered the showroom and headed to their bikes.
Devon McCarty, 10, of the Hancock club, promptly went to Younger, shook his hand and thanked him for the gift.
“I thought it was really cool that I got a new bike and wanted to thank him,” Devon said.
Zenaisia Walker, 11, of the Elgin Station club, said her bike at home had two flat tires. She had a hard time containing her excitement.
“I wouldn't stop talking about it. I kept looking at the clock at school,” she said.
Nia Hart, 10, said she was happy because she wanted a bike for Christmas. Her father was overwhelmed.
“It's an amazing thing. It's nice to see so many caring and giving people. For a lot of these kids, this is a miracle,” Milton Hart said.
Younger said money for the event came from the Younger Motor Cars Foundation, which helps charitable organizations in the area. He challenged others to look for ways to help in the community.
“The bigger thing is this is meant to spur others. As a car dealer in the worst (economic) year in 37 years, there are definitely other people who can help. There are plenty of other kids who need other things,” Younger said.
Approach Angle Special: Tacoma earns Best Resale Value Award from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com*
Objectives: Review honors awarded by Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com to Toyota Review definition of resale value and importance of kbb.com awards Emphasize how resale value helps keep total ownership cost low Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com presented Toyota with a total of eight 2010 Best Resale Value Awards, including one as best brand for resale value and three for placing in the Top 10 of all vehicles. Here is a complete rundown of vehicles and categories:
2010 Tacoma – Best Resale Value: Mid-size Pickup and Top 10
2010 Highlander – Best Resale Value: Mid-size Utility Vehicle
2010 Sienna – Best Resale Value: Van
2010 Prius – Best Resale Value: Hybrid/Alternative Fuel Car and Top 10
2010 RAV4 – Best Resale Value: Top 10
2010 Toyota – Best Resale Value: Brand
While sticker price, fuel economy and safety features are often the deciding factors in a new-vehicle purchase, kbb.com experts suggest that consumers should also consider resale value when comparing vehicles. Following is a short Q&A that will help you understand this prestigious award:
What exactly is the Best Resale Value Award from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com? It recognizes vehicles expected to keep the greatest proportion of their original retail price after five years of ownership. These projections are based on the Kelley Blue Book Official Residual Value Guide—which is compiled by numerous automotive data researchers and market analysts—and used by financial institutions and the leasing industry. Certain low-volume and high-priced vehicles are excluded from consideration, except in luxury and high-performance categories. In addition to awarding the top overall brand and top luxury brand with best resale value, awards are presented in 16 vehicle categories and for the Overall Top 10 models.
What makes resale value important? Buying a car or truck is a major financial decision for many households. Kbb.com experts say that depreciation can be the greatest expense incurred by drivers during the first five years of owning a vehicle. By choosing a vehicle that is likely to retain more of its value than others, the consumer helps keep the total ownership cost lower. Higher resale values also help nurture customer loyalty because the owner is in a better position to purchase a new Toyota in the future.
Does the Kelley Blue Book resale value indicate the exact price for a vehicle after five years? No, it's an estimate/projection that consumers can use to compare vehicles. The actual resale value of a used vehicle depends on mileage, maintenance history and popularity of the vehicle, as well as a variety of market conditions and economic factors.
Toyota Announces Details of Remedy to Address Potential Accelerator Pedal Entrapment
Torrance, Calif., November 25, 2009 - - Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS) announced today details of the vehicle-based remedy to address the root cause of the potential risk for floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals in certain Toyota and Lexus models. Toyota issued a consumer safety advisory on September 29 on this issue and has, as an interim measure, commenced the mailing of safety notices to certain Toyota and Lexus owners on October 30. The models involved are: 2007 to 2010 MY (model year) Camry, 2005 to 2010 MY Avalon, 2004 to 2009 MY Prius, 2005 to 2010 MY Tacoma, 2007 to 2010 MY Tundra, 2007 to 2010 MY ES350, 2006 to 2010 MY IS250, and 2006 to 2010 MY IS 350. The specific measures of the vehicle-based remedy are as follows: 1. The shape of the accelerator pedal will be reconfigured to address the risk of floor mat entrapment, even when an older-design all-weather floor mat or other inappropriate floor mat is improperly attached, or is placed on top of another floor mat. For the ES350, Camry, and Avalon models involved, the shape of the floor surface underneath will also be reconfigured to increase the space between the accelerator pedal and the floor. 2. Vehicles with any genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mat will be provided with newly-designed replacement driver- and front passenger-side all-weather floor mats. In addition, as a separate measure independent of the vehicle-based remedy, Toyota will install a brake override system onto the involved Camry, Avalon, and Lexus ES 350, IS350 and IS 250 models as an extra measure of confidence. This system cuts engine power in case of simultaneous application of both the accelerator and brake pedals.
Toyota is in the process of completing development of these actions and for the ES350, Camry, and Avalon will start notifying owners of the involved vehicles via first-class mail by the end of this year. The remedy process regarding the other five models will occur on a rolling schedule during 2010. Dealers will be trained and equipped to make the necessary modifications to these models starting at the beginning of 2010. Initially, dealers will be instructed on how to reshape the accelerator pedal for the repair. As replacement parts with the same shape as the modified pedal become available, they will be made available to dealers for the repair, beginning around April 2010. Customers who have had the remedy completed will have the opportunity to receive a new pedal if they desire. In the meantime, owners of the involved vehicles are asked to take out any removable driver’s floor mat and not replace it with any other floor mat until they are notified of the vehicle-based remedy, as notified in the consumer safety advisory and the interim notice. The brake override system will be made standard equipment throughout the Toyota and Lexus product lines starting with January 2010 production of ES350 and Camry and is scheduled to be incorporated into new production of most models by the end of 2010. The safety of our owners and the public is our utmost concern and Toyota has and will continue to thoroughly investigate and take appropriate measures to address any defect trends that are identified. Owners who have further questions are asked to visit www.toyota.com or www.lexus.com or contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1 800 331-4331 or Lexus Customer Assistance at 1-800-295-3987.
Unintended Acceleration: Toyota Addresses The Issues
Recently, there has been some controversy regarding a safety recall that Toyota is undertaking. We want to take this opportunity to set the record straight with a chronology of the events of the past week.
On Friday, October 30, we began sending letters to Toyota and Lexus owners (link to owner letter) about a defect related to motor vehicle safety that exists on certain models. The defect is the potential for an unsecured or incompatible driver’s floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it to get stuck in the wide open position. As an interim precaution, we asked owners to take out any removable driver’s floor mat and not replace it with any other floor mat until a vehicle-based remedy can be developed and implemented on their vehicle. When such a remedy is determined, owners will be notified.
In addition, the letter contains instructions for owners on what to do should they experience accelerator pedal interference. On Monday, November 2, Toyota distributed a press release announcing the customer letter campaign and cited a recent decision by NHTSA related to unintended acceleration on a Lexus vehicle.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, a series of media reports circulated, stating that there was growing suspicion by some Toyota and Lexus owners, that a glitch of some kind in the electronic engine management system was the cause of reports of unintended acceleration. There were also reports in the media that Toyota’s press release implied that the company believed the only issue was the removal of floor mats and that its future recall would not involve any other remedies.
First, the question of unintended acceleration involving Toyota and Lexus vehicles has been one of the most thoroughly and repeatedly investigated issues by Toyota, as well as by the engineering experts at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Six times in the past six years NHTSA has undertaken an exhaustive review of allegations of unintended acceleration on Toyota and Lexus vehicles and six times the agency closed the investigation without finding any electronic engine control system malfunction to be the cause of unintended acceleration.
Just last week NHTSA denied a request for an additional investigation of unwanted and unintended acceleration of model year 2007 Lexus ES350 vehicles and model years 2002-2003 Lexus ES300. After conducting an extensive technical review of the issue, including interviews with consumers who had complained of unwanted acceleration, NHTSA concluded that “…the only defect trend related to vehicle speed control in the subject vehicles involved the potential for accelerator pedals to become trapped near the floor by out-of-position or inappropriate floor mat installations (link to ODI report).”
Finally, On Wednesday of this week, NHTSA issued a statement that read in part that “ A press release put out by Toyota earlier this week about their recall of 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles inaccurately stated NHTSA had reached a conclusion that no defect exists in vehicles in which the driver’s floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured. NHTSA has told Toyota and consumers that removing the recalled floor mats is the most immediate way to address the safety risk and avoid the possibility of the accelerator becoming stuck. But it is simply an interim measure.”
It was never Toyota’s intention to mislead or provide inaccurate information and we regret any confusion our press release may have caused with the media and with the public. Toyota agrees with NHTSA’s position that the removal of the floor mats is an interim measure and that further vehicle-based action is required. We are in the process of developing appropriate vehicle-based remedies that will help prevent accelerator pedal entrapment. In the meantime we will continue to keep you updated on the floor mat situation as more information becomes available.
